The mineral pyrite, also known as fool's gold, is an iron sulfide with the chemical formula FeS2. Pyrite (FeS2) is a useful material with a variety of applications, from sulfuric acid production to photovoltaic devices. Interestingly, proponents of the geothermal theory of life on Earth claim that FeS2 evolved 4 billion years ago and may have been used as an energy source by early plant life. Meanwhile, bacteria such as Thiobacillus ferrooxydans that survive in oxygen-free environments obtain energy only from FeS2 to maintain a high biomass.
